What is Biblical Theology?

As our mission is all about Biblical theology in Spanish, we thought it would be appropriate to make one of our first posts about it.

Biblical theology describes the process by which the revelation that God has given us in the Bible develops and reaches its goal which is God's final revelation of his purposes in Jesus Christ (2 Cor 1:20). It takes into account the unity of the Bible and seeks to understand the relationships between the Old and New Testaments. To do so, it is concerned to understand each passage or book of the Bible in its own historical context, so as to be able to find its theological meaning for its own time and then relate it to the message of the whole Bible and to Chris. In this sense, biblical theology forms the basis of systematic theology.

Biblical theology takes the texts from before the Pentecost as part of the material from which Christian doctrine can be formulated, because the Old Testament was written for believers in Christ (Rom 4:23-25; 1 Cor:9:8-10; 10:11). Therefore, we can say that the study of the Bible (both Old and New Testaments) must be based on biblical theology.

Because biblical theology aims to give us a 'big picture' to help us understand biblical literature and its progression from creation to new creation, we can say that the kingdom of God is the central theme of Scripture (Mk 1:14-15). Graeme Goldsworthy says that the kingdom of God is defined as "the people of God, in God's place, under God's rule".

This then allows us to break up the Bible into three stages:

1. The kingdom of God prefigured in history from Abraham to the son of David, Solomon.

2. The concepts of the historical kingdom projected into the glorious future by the prophets while the earthly kingdom decayed.

3. The fulfillment of the kingdom and the true king, Jesus.

In addition to these three stages, there is also a prologue found in Genesis 1-11 and an epilogue or completion when Christ returns.
